Michael Bublé is one of the most successful singers in the world, thanks to his smooth jazz and easy-listening style, which attracts fans of all ages. He has sold more than 75 million records across the globe - and he's still only 44.

Everyone seems to love him - and it's easy to see why. The four-time Grammy Award-winner has a style and personality that endear him to fans everywhere. He's known as one of the hardest workers in show business and his live shows are legendary.

Where it all began

Born in British Columbia in 1975, he grew up in a family where music and singing were a big part of life. He said the first song he remembered hearing was Bing Crosby's White Christmas at the age of five. It stuck in his head and he began to love the crooning style of singers like Crosby and his ilk.

Legend has it that when Bublé was 13, he began singing White Christmas himself on a car journey - his parents realised what a lovely voice he had. At 16, he was performing on the local live circuit and was rocketed to success when he appeared in a television documentary called Big Band Boom in 1997.

Now, two decades later, he has released eight hit studio albums, seven of which reached number one in the charts in various countries across the world, including his biggest-seller, Christmas, in 2011, which topped the charts globally and achieved ten-time platinum status.

Feeling Good

Listening to Bublé sing in his unique style makes people feel good - hence it's no surprise his single, Feeling Good, achieved silver status when it was released in 2005. It has since had a staggering 132 million views on YouTube.

Bublé has made the song his own, even though it was written 11 years before he was even born! Composed by English song writing team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the musical, The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd, in 1964, Newley wrote the music and Bricusse the lyrics.

It was first performed on stage in the UK in 1964 when actor and musician Cyril "Cy" Grant sang Feeling Good. The UK tour was a big hit and the musical moved to Broadway in 1965, with American opera singer Gilbert Price taking over the role played by Grant on the British tour.

Although the musical had many beautiful songs, Feeling Good was the stand-out hit from the show. It was described by critics as the "ultimate feel-good song", with inspiring lyrics.

What do the lyrics mean?

The narrator is “feeling good” and experiencing intense happiness and optimism after overcoming adversity. The track puts forward the idea that this is "new day" and a "new life" for the narrator, who's speaking to nature, saying, "Birds flying high, you know how I feel. Breeze driftin' on by, you know how I feel."

His mood epitomises everything that's good about nature and wildlife, as he compares his feelings to those of a "dragonfly out in the sun", "butterflies all having fun", the "stars when you shine" and the "scent of the pine".

Many artists have recorded cover versions of Feeling Good, starting with Nina Simone on her 1965 album, I Put a Spell on You. It's Michael Bublé's version that most people remember, his smooth vocals bringing to life the incredible imagery of the lyrics.

Passionate music

The accompanying video features Bublé thinking very hard at first and coming to different realisations about himself and nature. At first, he's walking along, hands in his pockets, looking a little stressed, but as the passionate music reaches a crescendo, so do his feelings. He becomes more animated and positive, encouraged by the beauty all around him, as he says, “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me … and I’m feeling good.”

Being outdoors, surrounded by nature, usually has a positive effect on most people. As the coronavirus lockdown restrictions are further eased on Saturday 4th July, people all over the UK can start feeling good!
